Class 1 Print

Summer 2 2010

The last half term of the year promises to be very exciting one for class 1. We shall be taking
part in the whole school topic ‘Our Heritage’. The first week we have been thinking about where and
why people settle in particular places and learning about geographical features such as rivers,
valleys, hills, mountains and so forth.
The second week we shall be focusing on castles, what they were like, we shall convert our
play house into a castle and create a large wall display to help us to identify the different parts of a
castle, hopefully complete with knights and ladies. We shall also be learning about the past through
nursery rhymes on one day.
The third week we will be thinking about famous people and we will be concentrating on
two famous painters, Lowry and Constable and two well known authors, Beatrix Potter and A.A.
Milne.
Week 4 will see us turning our attention to traditional food and entertainment and we shall
be focusing on creating a mediaeval banquet with story-telling and entertainment and jousting! A
few extra hobby horses would be handy! The end of the week will be Fred’s Circus and workshops,
which will be very exciting.
The fifth week sees us turning our attention to fashion and music. We shall be thinking
about different uniforms and hats and we would be grateful for any interesting examples of these to
share with the children. The children will experience different types of music, I shall be thinking
about the proms, so if anyone has a union jack we could borrow, that would be great.
Week 6 will be all about traditional sports and we are planning to give the children a taste of
as many traditional English sports as we can. The final week will focus on the school as part of the
village community and the main event of that week will be a traditional afternoon tea for the senior
citizens in the village.

Summer 1 2010

Our topic this half term is teddy bears and other toys. We will be finding out how bears are made from characteristic materials and that other toys are made of different materials with different properties. We will be looking at how some materials age and will compare old and new bears. I will ask the children to bring in their own teddies in the first week, some toys they used to play with when they were babies in the second week, some old toys and teddies, possibly your own or grandparents in the third week, their favourite toy in the fourth week and push and pull along toys and battery powered toys in the fifth week.

Spring 2 2010

Our topic for this half term is Pets. We will be thinking about our pets and how we have to care and look after them. I will ask the children to bring in photos of any pets you have and the children will share these with the class and be used as part of our display. Our role-play will focus on the vet’s surgery, so any items that you think might be useful for our play corner will be much appreciated. If any parents would be willing to bring in their pet to show the children, probably for the first few minutes or last few minutes of the day, the children would be very interested to meet them! I shall also be inviting a vet to come in and talk to the children about her work, this has always been a really super and very informative experience for the children.

Spring 1 2010

Our topic for this half term is Winter Weather. The children will be learning about the different ways we keep warm with clothes, food and heating and that there are different sorts of heat. We will discuss the different types of winter weather and the symbols that can be used to denote
them.
We will think how animals keep warm and begin to learn the names of some common birds. We will also find out about animals that live in snowy lands. We will look at how some materials are better than others for keeping us dry and talk about how people dress to suit the climate and customs in
different parts of the world.

For technology we will be examining different types of umbrellas. We will also design and make a bird table, talking about what a bird table might need.

In RE we will be thinking about Jesus as a storyteller and retelling some of his best-known stories.

Autumn 2 2009

Our topic for the first two weeks will be about school, where school is, the different people who work in school and the various areas of the grounds. In the second week we will be taking a walk around the village, so that the children become more aware of the location of the school and its setting.

In the third and fourth week we will be concentrating on celebrations, particularly birthdays.  We will be talking about how they have changed and what they could do as babies and what they can do now.

The final weeks of the term will be spent learning about Christmas, the story of the nativity and preparing for the festive season. During the week beginning 30th November, we will begin to be involved in a variety of workshops in preparation for our Christmas performance.

Autumn 1 2009

This half term is a settling in period when the children will be helped to familiarise themselves with the school routines and they will be introduced to most areas of the curriculum. In the first few weeks we will be basing most of our activities around familiar nursery rhymes, traditional tales and ourselves. Later on, the Harvest Festival will give us the opportunity to learn about the season of autumn and harvest. Harvest Festival always takes place during this first half term and each class will perform a short item.

It is government policy for all children to be assessed during the first year in school using The Foundation Stage Profile, which covers personal, emotional and social development, language and literacy, mathematics, knowledge and understanding of the world, creative and physical development. The assessments take place when the children are involved in normal classroom activities and just before the half term holiday you will have the opportunity to discuss my initial observations.
